I’m a Florida girl. Born and raised. Experiencing my second winter in Nashville still feels surreal—especially when the first snow of the year transforms the city into a sparkling winter wonderland! Fresh, fluffy snow brightens everything: streets, trees, lawns, cars—all coated in clean white that somehow makes the world feel quieter and sharper, even if it’s freezing.
Dogs in the Snow: Joy vs. Judgment
My Shepherd-Husky mix loves the snow! He takes mouthfuls of snow every other step on our daily walks. You can see the excitement on his face, with a dusting of snow on his snout giving him a little snow mustache! He’s a little snow-loving machine, rolling, crunching, and prancing as if every flake is a personal invitation to play. My pittie mix, on the other hand, keeps giving me that judgmental look, plotting how quickly he can get back inside. He tolerates the cold, but clearly does not understand why the world has suddenly gone white.

Watching them in the same snowfall is strangely grounding. Some days you’re all in, some days you’re not. Some dogs roll in pure joy, some gingerly test each step—why can’t we all be a little more like the husky? And why do some ordinary mornings feel extraordinary the moment snow lands?
The Quiet Magic of Fresh Snow
There’s a quiet magic in a fresh snowfall. The morning light hits each flake, making it sparkle without trying. The crunch underfoot, the contrast of white against the dark trees, the way the world seems a little softer, a little brighter. Even with the chill in the air, there’s a moment worth pausing for—a small ordinary thing that becomes unforgettable if you just notice it.

By the time we head back inside, I’m chilled through, my pittie is snug in his jacket and grumbling, and my husky is covered in snow like a walking snowball of happiness. And somehow, that’s enough. It’s ordinary life—cold, messy, a little ridiculous—but also sparkling, bright, and worth noticing.
Do you have a pet that either loves or hates the snow? Have you noticed how fresh snow can make even the most ordinary day feel a little magical?
