Welcome, to the Lovely Ordinary

We all feel it sometimes. Ordinary. Boring. Average. We get stuck in the rut that is our everyday lives. The alarm goes off, coffee brews, emails pile up, school drop-offs, work meetings, laundry, dinner, bedtime. But I’ve been thinking lately: what if these ordinary days aren’t as “ordinary” as they seem? What if there’s something to notice, something worth appreciating, even in the mundane?

Instead of rushing through these everyday moments, I’m trying to slow down and notice the little things that make life feel alive. The dog snoring next to me on the couch, the first sip of coffee in the morning that makes you feel awake and ready to take on the day, trying a new recipe for dinner that turns out to be delicious! It’s in these small, quiet moments that life sneaks in its magic. The laughter at a silly joke, the satisfaction of a perfectly cooked meal, the unexpected text from a friend that makes you smile—these are the moments that remind us why even the “ordinary” can be extraordinary.

So, how do we do this? Well, here are some ways that I have started to make the most of every day.

Morning gratitude: While drinking my morning coffee, I jot down one thing I’m thankful for. It sets the tone for the day.

Digital sunset: I try to put my phone away for at least 30 minutes before bed and just enjoy the quiet, whether it’s reading, journaling, or listening to music.

Mini nature breaks: Even a five-minute walk outside during lunch can reset my energy and perspective.

Little joys list: I keep a running list of small things that make me happy—like a new scent of candle, a funny podcast, or a favorite snack. When life feels repetitive, I pick one to indulge in.

I’ve decided not to take these average days for granted. I’m choosing to notice, to savor, and to find joy in the rhythm of daily life. Because when we slow down and really pay attention, ordinary days can become the most meaningful of all.
