Looking Forward, Standing Still

With the holidays at the end of the year, it’s very easy to compare yourself to the rest of the world. Every holiday movie saturating our streaming platforms is about finding love, happiness, and some kind of Christmas magic. The New Year is a massive celebration about new beginnings and new connections, starting the “best year ever!” Social media fills up with highlight reels of family trips, matching pajamas, and perfectly planned celebrations. But let’s be honest—that isn’t real life. And if you don’t have a big Christmas or a flashy New Year’s moment, that’s not a failure. It’s normal.

It is New Year’s Day. I wake up next to my husband, the bed warm and familiar. The house is quiet—not in a cinematic, “new beginnings” way, but just because it’s early and nothing is demanding my attention yet. I get up, make coffee, and take a moment to notice the steam rising from the mug, the soft light filtering through the blinds, the slow stretch of the dogs as they begin their day.

There’s no countdown replaying in my head, no resolutions written in a notebook, no sudden urge to reinvent myself. I’m not rushing anywhere. The year behind me exists, but it’s not yelling for my attention. The year ahead is there too—uncertain, unfinished, and honestly, a little vague. And yet, in the morning’s ordinariness, it holds something delicate: the pause between what has passed and what is coming.

I notice the small, ordinary rhythms that make up life; the hum of the refrigerator, the way the coffee smells stronger in the quiet, the simple act of standing here with time to watch and breathe. They remind me that life is built from these small, steady moments, not the dramatic ones we tell stories about.

And now, at the start of a new year, I sit in this quiet pause. I don’t know what will happen next. The anticipation isn’t about fixing anything or making plans; it’s about feeling the openness without filling it immediately. For a few minutes, I let myself stand still, noticing, breathing, being present.

Today, that is enough. Standing still feels like moving forward, and in that ordinary, quiet way, I begin again.
