While I was taking my dogs out for a walk this afternoon, I had to pause to take in the neighborhood. Everything was still. It was quiet, peaceful, a gentle breeze ruffling the trees.
I realized I don’t always have an opportunity to be outside and it be so quiet. Usually there is road work, or construction, or other people out walking their dogs. These things tend to add a bit of stress to our daily walks. I have one dog who is afraid of big trucks and loud noises, so he is always anxious when passing by the road work. My other dog gets excited when we see animals or people on our walks, which can be a stressful experience for us all!
But today, we were able to have a calm, relaxing walk. There was no traffic. No road work. No one else out on the street. It felt like the calm before a storm, but I tried not to dwell on a potential storm coming our way. I just paused, appreciated the peace and quiet, and the breathing room it gave me. For once, I wasn’t rushing to get the walk over with or bracing for the next distraction. I could actually feel myself settle. The dogs did too — their shoulders loosened, their pace steadied, and they trotted along like they finally had permission to just exist without reacting to everything around them.
Moments like that don’t show up often, and honestly, I forget how much I need them. It’s easy to get swept up in noise and schedules and the constant feeling of being “on.” But that small, quiet stretch of sidewalk reminded me that peace doesn’t always announce itself. Sometimes it just waits for you to notice it.

By the time we made it back home, the world had gone back to its usual hum, but I carried some of that stillness with me. It was a good reminder: take the quiet when it comes, even if it’s just a few minutes on a random Tuesday with two dogs who are finally, mercifully, calm.
